Virtual Box

Another freebie I guess.

I don’t know if anybody has played around with this before but it might be useful should you be sad enough to want to play with Oracle or Linux at home :-).

Anyhow, Oracle Virtual Box is a bit like VMWare in that it allows your desktop or laptop to host virtual machines. Once you’ve installed it (which is perfectly straightforward) you can then drag and drop different machine images into Virtual Box and use it as though you were on a real machine.

On the Oracle website there is a machine image that includes all of the following:

  • Oracle Linux 5
  • Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database Cache
  • Oracle XML DB
  • Oracle SQL Developer
  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler
  • Oracle Application Express
  • Oracle JDeveloper
  • Hands-On-Labs (accessed via the Toolbar Menu in Firefox)

It’s here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/databaseappdev-vm-161299.html and is 4.67 Gig.

Here’s a picture of what it looks like when its up and running (click for the full image).
